Background and Experience

Steven D. Jones, principal of East-West Business Strategies, is an interculturalist and international business consultant who specializes in how to "get things done" in today's Russia and newly independent states. An active participant in Russian-American affairs since the early 1980s, he served as a personal interpreter to Boris Yeltsin during Yeltsin's first visit to the United States in 1989. He has lived in and traveled extensively throughout the former Soviet Union, and now serves as a negotiator, mediary, and advisor for American organizations in the CIS. Jones has taught at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies in Washington DC, and has translated and edited scores of publications, accompanied media and VIP tours to Russia, and assisted in contract and exchange negotiations for businesses, museums, and other organizations. He created and delivers the Russian cross-cultural training program at NASA for the astronauts, technicians, engineers, and upper management involved in the joint Russian-American Mir/International Space Station project, as well as for many American companies. Jones has organized and participated in numerous international meetings and seminars, and has helped prepare thousands of Americans for the experience of traveling to and living in Russia. He holds a B.A. in Russian from the University of Louisville and an M.A. in Soviet Studies from Harvard University.
